As a nonprofit, Veteran-owned organization, Service to Civilian exists to educate the community and most importantly, employers. We are here to be a voice for our Veterans specific to their employment needs. We create community engagement to bring awareness to Veteran employment initiatives. 80% of Veterans are under-employed and 100% of employers are missing the top 10 soft skills a Veteran brings to the table. We work with the community to recognize employers who have a successful and effective Veteran hiring program. We partner with organizations to provide job readiness resources to Veterans in the Upstate. We work with organizations to set up Veteran hiring programs, resource groups and mentorships.
Extraordinary candidates are those with military experience. Military personnel are exceptionally well-trained, highly disciplined, goal-oriented, mission centric and dedicated. In 2016, 20.9 million men and women were Veterans, accounting for about 9 percent of the civilian non-institutional population age 18 and over. We know Veterans have strong leadership skills that include the ability to foster cultural inclusion, promote teamwork and achieve goals. For employers, scrambling to do more with less, there is value in a veteran's ability to adapt rapidly to changing priorities. Getting the job done when resources are scarce, supplies have diminished and lives are on the line, can translate to success when your business is on the line.
Create and support a Veterans hiring program in your company. Do more to understand and appreciate the value of our Veterans. Create an environment in your organization that has an active Veterans recruiting effort, including one that adjusts an applicant tracking system that automatically dismisses a Veteran candidate for "lack of industry experience". Train HR and hiring managers on effective interview skills specific to Veterans. Understand that 91% of the jobs in the military have direct translation to civilian occupations. There are several right reasons to hire a Veteran. There are no wrong reasons.
Be part of the solution.
